Restoring books
At Cloggyart we also restore books of which the covers came detached from the body of the book. We can not restore all books but feel free to present the remnants of you book to us and we will give a fair assessment about if we can repair it and how much it will cost. Find below some examples of what we have done in the past. Each example has a number of pictures attached to it in a slide show to demonstrate the start and the finish of our work.
South African Cookery book
The slide show below demonstrates the restoration of a South African cookery book " kook en geniet" The book was presented to me with the covers of the book completely detached from the body (1). The book was already a long time in the family and contained all sorts of specific notes connected to the recipes. The main thing the customer wanted was to preserve the body of the book and put a new cover around it.
For the new covers Iused paper with a design of Dutch groceries packages used in the 1950 (2). Coming from South Africa and speaking South Africans they were able to read this. Also, as the cookery book came from the same time period the design of the paper matched as well.
To protect the book when not in use, I made a case (3) for safe storage and covered with the same design paper. These measures should ensure that the cookery book can be used again for a long time, possibly till the next generation.

The Golden Staircase by Louey Chisholm
A customer approached us asking us if we could repair the children's book "The Golden Staircase". The book was a family treasure as it was read to her as a child, she read it to her children and now her daughter wanted to read it to her children.
The book was presented to me with the covers detached from the body of the book (1). The customer wanted me to make a new cover for the book preferably with the same pattern as before. I asked her to make copies of the old covers at a printshop so I could use that as material for the cover.
I re-covered the book (2) and saved the original inscription of the title on the old spine and glued it on to the new spine (3). Made a case for protection which finished it off quite nicely.

A bible with Wellington harbour
A friend asked me if I could re-cover his bible. It was about 10 years old and was clearly used intensively. Not only the cover of the spine was gone (1) but also the connection of the cover with the body of the book (2). He tried to fix it him self with duck tape (3) ahhhhh!!!, but that did not work.
I asked him what kind of design he would like to have on the cover and suggested a map from Wellington's iconic Harbour. "that would be cool" was his immediate reply, as he himself lived in Wellington.
I re-covered the bible with a map from Wellington harbour on the front and a map from Karori on the back (4). Made a nice green case for as well (6). This bible is ready for another 10 years if not longer.

Grandma Recipes book
A Lady came to me with a request if I could bind a number of recipes in to a recipes book. Her mother turned eighty and she had asked all the family members to write something to her mother and tell her about they experienced was the most delicious food Grandma ever made for them.
We discussed how the cover would look like and coming from Scotland she wondered if I could cover the book with the family material design. The pictures below give you an impression how Grandma recipes book turned out.
