Chess / Draught board
Price: NZ$ 950.00
Sometimes you have to give idea's time to develop by allowing the available material to speak to you. That is how it went making this chess /draught board.
I wanted to make some use of the beams when dismantling the pallets. As they are all around 1 meter long I came up with the idea to make a square table top from them by randomly glueing 10 of the beams together. Looking at the rough subliminal pattern a very rough outline of a chess table came to the surface. Why that thought came into my head I don't know as I don't play chess at all! I decided to play along with the the pattern and created 64 squares which Marian coloured in (see picture below).
What is a chess/draught board without its pieces? A table from recycled pallet beams needs recycled pieces. I had to wait until something appropriate came my way. One day, when dismantling crossbars, I had the ceramic material in my hand and it suddenly dawned on my that these were chess pieces. With some imagination, the King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight and Pawn, they were all present. On top of this the Pawns could also function as draught pieces when playing a draught game (see picture below).
Such an unusual chess/draught board deserves an unusual support. I wanted it to be quirky, made from recycled pallet wood but still solid enough to hold the board. I found the solution by looking at examples of pallet tables on the internet. Made from four 150 mm wide pallet slats, glued together with “wings” at top and bottom to stabilise it all(see picture below). Unfortunately I can not find the original picture again for reference to the original source.
This is how it all came together. A bit of an accident. I started out to make a table top and ended up with an original chess/draught board. What I have learned through this process is that If you follow the subliminal gestures hidden in the material you work with, the outcome is a holistic original creation as if it is meant to be. And you know what... people love that.
In the mean time I have sold 2 boards. One to Metlifecare Kapiti village in Paraparaumu and one to a friend.
